Types of plant distillation
Steam Distillation:
Steam distillation is the most common method for essential oil extraction. In this process, steam passes through the plant material, causing the essential oils to evaporate. The resulting steam and oil vapor are condensed back into liquid form. Due to its hydrophobic nature, the oil typically floats on top of the water (hydrosol).
Hydrodistillation:
Hydrodistillation is another effective method, where the plant material is directly immersed in water, and the mixture is heated. The steam generated carries the essential oils with it. This technique is particularly useful for delicate flowers.
Water and Steam Distillation:
Water and steam distillation combine both methods. The plant material is partially submerged in water, while steam is introduced from below. This approach is especially useful for plants that require a longer distillation time.
Cold Press Distillation:
Cold press distillation, primarily used for citrus fruits, mechanically presses essential oils out of the plant material without the use of heat.
Fractional Distillation:
