Where Science, Nature, and Thought Intertwine.
The human body hosts trillions of microorganisms collectively known as the microbiota—a complex ecosystem essential to overall health. Found on the skin, in the gut, and throughout various body sites, these microorganisms include bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microscopic life forms. Together, they support critical biological functions such as digestion, immune regulation, and defense against harmful pathogens, maintaining a dynamic balance between the body and its environment.
When the skin’s microbiota exists in a balanced and diverse state, it is referred to as eubiosis*—a condition in which beneficial microorganisms thrive while potentially harmful species remain under control. This equilibrium supports essential biological processes, including immune regulation and protection against pathogens.
Among the key microorganisms inhabiting the skin is Staphylococcus epidermidis, a Gram-positive bacterium that functions as a natural guardian. It inhibits the colonization of harmful microbes and contributes to skin resilience by strengthening immune responses and maintaining barrier integrity. Sustaining the presence and activity of S. epidermidis is therefore vital to preserving a healthy cutaneous ecosystem.
Recent research has shown that our broad-spectrum preservative system—which contains less than 0.0498% DHA and is used in select formulations with slow-extracted botanicals and fresh fruit blends—does not inhibit Staphylococcus epidermidis.
This finding means that our preservative system helps maintain the skin’s natural microbiota balance, reinforcing eubiosis*, which is essential for optimal skin function and long-term health.
*Eubiosis refers to a balanced state of the microbiota that supports immune function, defends against pathogens, and preserves skin vitality.
