Many people assume that if a skincare product does not contain essential oils, it should also be completely without aroma. In botanical skincare, however, the situation is more complex.
Plants naturally produce aromatic molecules. These compounds help protect the plant and contribute to its characteristic scent.
Scientific literature identifies compounds such as linalool, citronellal, citral, geraniol, and related volatile molecules as naturally occurring constituents in many aromatic plants, including lemon balm (Melissa officinalis).
Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic fractions obtained from plants, usually through steam distillation. Because they are concentrated, they contain high levels of volatile aromatic compounds.
Botanical waters, also known as hydrosols or aromatic waters, are different. They are the water phase collected during distillation. While they are far more dilute than essential oils, peer-reviewed studies show that they can still retain small amounts of naturally occurring volatile compounds transferred from the plant during the distillation process.
This means that a formula may be created without added fragrance or essential oils, while still carrying a soft, natural aroma originating from botanical waters, extracts, cold-pressed oils, or fruit-derived ingredients.
For example, lemon balm botanical water may naturally contain trace amounts of compounds such as linalool or related aromatic molecules. These levels are significantly lower than those typically found in essential oils, but they may still be relevant for individuals with very specific fragrance sensitivities.
This distinction is important because “essential oil-free” does not necessarily mean “free from all naturally occurring aromatic compounds.”
