Interview

What inspired you to start your niche skincare shop back in 2005?

Be Genki has evolved many times over the past 20 years. I originally created the brand out of a desire to help one of my closest friends, who was struggling with anxiety at the time. I formulated an essential oil blend specifically to help ease her symptoms — and that’s where it all began.

A few years later, while searching for high-quality, everyday personal care products for myself, I realized how difficult it was to find options that were not only natural and organic but also genuinely effective. I thought, if I’m looking for this, other women must be too. That realization led to the creation of the Be Genki shop — a space for consciously curated, results-driven products designed to support both wellbeing and beauty.

How has the skincare industry changed since you first started, and how have you adapted to the changes?

My gosh, it has changed radically. When I started, there was no social media, and genuinely natural or organic brands were rare. Many products looked appealing but failed to deliver — packaging leaned toward the “hippie” aesthetic, and formulas often lacked performance. Natural hair care, for example, tended to leave hair limp or greasy.

Today, the market is overflowing with options — which is wonderful. It means people have become more aware of the toxicity in conventional and some so-called natural products, and are seeking cleaner, safer alternatives. For many of us who couldn’t find what we needed back then, that frustration became the spark to create our own brands.

As for adapting, I’ll admit I’m not a social media expert — and truthfully, I don’t aspire to be one. I prefer to focus on nurturing our customers, many of whom have been with us since day one. I’ve never been drawn to chasing likes or trends; that kind of noise can distract from what really matters.

So, have I adapted? In some ways, yes — we maintain an online presence and connect digitally with our community. But in spirit, I’ve stayed the same. I won’t compromise my values as we move further into an AI-driven, digital world. My store will always be built on purity, performance, and integrity. You won’t see me filtered or airbrushed online — because now, more than ever, authenticity is essential in a world where it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s not.

What have been the biggest challenges in running a niche skincare shop, and how did you overcome them?

Understanding shopping behavior has been both the most fascinating and the most perplexing part of running a niche beauty business. There have been times when customers specifically requested that we bring in a certain brand — and then it didn’t sell. Other times, a product might sit quietly on the shelf for months before suddenly becoming a bestseller. And occasionally, I’ll be convinced that something will perform incredibly well, only to find the opposite is true.

I’m not sure there’s a way to truly overcome that — it’s human psychology, and it continues to intrigue me. Consumer decisions can be unpredictable, and while I can’t always explain them, I find the mystery endlessly interesting.

What’s the most rewarding part of running this business for two decades?

Without question, it’s the messages from customers sharing how a particular product has changed their lives. It might sound surprising to say that skincare or wellness products can have such an impact, but in truth, feeling good and looking good are deeply connected to our sense of joy and inner peace.

I feel truly honored to have touched so many lives — even in a small way — by helping people discover exceptional products that support their health, beauty, and wellbeing, all without compromising safety or integrity.

How do you select the ingredients or brands to feature in your shop?

Most of the brands I choose are those I’ve personally sought out to meet my own standards and needs. Certain categories — like hair care and makeup — are especially challenging because of how much greenwashing exists in the market. Even some “organic” hair care brands still use sulfates and harsh foaming agents, while many so-called natural makeup lines contain ingredients that can seriously disrupt the skin’s health.

I suppose there’s a bit of a working dog in me — once I set my focus on finding something exceptional, I won’t stop until I do. If it takes a year or even three to discover the right brand, so be it. I don’t believe in settling for good enough. Every product we carry must be outstanding, or it simply doesn’t belong in the shop. For me, compromise has never been an option.

Who is your typical customer, and how has your customer base changed over the years?

Our typical customer is someone like me — in their mid-40s — who’s genuinely searching for products that work. They’re tired of spending money on formulas that overpromise and underdeliver.

That said, our community spans a broad range of ages. Many of our customers are younger, discovering clean beauty for the first time, while others have been with us for years and trust us implicitly. It’s a healthy, evolving mix — from new explorers to long-standing regulars — all united by a shared desire for authenticity, effectiveness, and integrity in skincare.

What’s the most common skincare concern your customers come to you for?

The most common concerns are sensitivity and aging — customers often seek gentle, effective solutions that nurture the skin without irritation while supporting long-term vitality.

Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently in your journey?

Yes, absolutely. In the past, I was sometimes too enthusiastic about certain brands and ended up over-ordering stock. I also wouldn’t have chosen to become a distributor for some of them, knowing what I know now.

I once assumed that everyone working in the natural beauty space shared the same values of honesty and integrity, but experience taught me otherwise. It was a valuable lesson — never trust blindly, even when your assumptions are positive. People are people; some lead with integrity, and others don’t.

What’s the key to maintaining loyal customers in such a competitive industry?

It’s simple — treat people the way you want to be treated. Customers aren’t numbers; they’re real people with real concerns, trusting me with their hard-earned money. That trust means everything.

What I cannot stand is deception — selling “miracle” products that don’t deliver, or dressing poor formulations in clever marketing. I would honestly rather face a direct wrong than be deceived. Once, years ago, I was carjacked at knifepoint — and while that was terrifying, it was at least honest in its intent. Deception, by contrast, pretends to care while doing harm. In business and in life, I believe in transparency, honesty, and treating every person with respect.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone looking to start their own niche skincare business?

Follow your heart and do what you love — that way, it will never feel like work. Owning a niche skincare business certainly has its joyful, creative moments, but it also comes with plenty of routine, everyday tasks that keep it running. If your heart isn’t truly in it, those tasks will quickly feel heavy.

Life is short and far too precious to spend on things that don’t bring you joy. Passion and purpose are what sustain you — especially in an industry that demands both patience and authenticity.

Wrapping up, Samantha’s two-decade journey stands as a reflection of passion, integrity, and authenticity in an ever-evolving industry. From navigating the transformations of the beauty landscape to nurturing a loyal community, her story reminds us that true success is built on purpose and trust. As she continues to curate high-performing, consciously crafted products, Samantha remains guided by the same unwavering principles — purity, performance, and integrity.
